Artist Statement

My work constructs an experience within small midwestern rustbelt towns. By using slip transfers, decals, and raw clay I am able to pay homage to the landscapes that surround me. Between the forms made inspired by the structures found in rural towns, and the surface inspired by crumbling infrastructure - it layers the complexities of landscapes into a collage of entropy.

About Me

Alec Hoogland (they/them) graduated in 2016 with a degree in ceramics. After graduating, they spent 1.5 years working in a production studio. In 2018, Alec made the transition to a full-time studio practice. With works fired both in wood firing and oxidation, Alec aims to make the connection of the landscapes that cover the midwest - both industrial and rural and the people that use them.
